At Woodcock & Wilson, safety is not a checkbox – it’s a commitment. In the June 2025 edition of Inside Energy (EIC magazine), we shared our perspective on a critical but often misunderstood issue in hazardous area operations: the certification of non-electrical Ex equipment, such as industrial fans.

Too often, Ex safety is assumed to be covered by CE or UKCA marking alone. But as our article explains, the ATEX Directive allows self-certification for non-electrical equipment – a practice that leaves room for inconsistency, risk, and in some cases, dangerously inadequate compliance. In contrast, the IECEx scheme demands full third-party assessment and traceability, offering far greater assurance for those working in potentially explosive atmospheres.

In “Beyond compliance: addressing the risks of ATEX self-certification in non-electrical EX equipment”, we outline the risks of relying on self-declared conformity and highlight why our fans go beyond the minimum. Every IECEx-certified fan we produce has been tested, verified, and documented, providing our customers with genuine peace of mind, not just a label.

If you’re serious about safety, make sure your Ex equipment is more than just compliant – make sure it’s certified.
